The Heart of
French Broad School Studios

Located in the mountains of Western North Carolina, French Broad School Studios is a community of creatives dedicated to supporting artists through affordable work space, shared resources, and collaboration.

Founded in 2012, the community occupies a six-acre historic school property in Alexander, North Carolina, outside Asheville. The site provides rental workspaces for creatives in Buncombe County and the surrounding region, fostering a collaborative environment where professional practice and daily life intersect.

In 2019, a devastating fire destroyed thirteen artist studios on the property. In response, the organization expanded its mission with the creation of Fallout ArtSpace, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit performance arts venue established to ensure that artists would continue to have opportunities to create, perform, and grow despite significant setbacks.

Today, French Broad School Studios and Fallout ArtSpace work together to rebuild and sustain creative infrastructure, reflecting a long-term commitment to resilience, accessibility, and the role of the arts in strengthening community. The community continues to serve as a platform for creative work that connects people, place, and purpose.
